一 认知隐喻理论

认知语言学起源于20世纪70年代,基于人类对世界的经验,对世界的感知和概念化。第一届认知语言学大会于1989年在德国杜伊斯堡召开,成立了国际认知语言学协会,继而推出《认知语言学》杂志。认知隐喻理论是认知语言学中重要的理论组成部分。以亚里士多德为代表的传统的隐喻认为:“将属于一事物的名称用来指另一事物”。也就是说,隐喻是两个概念的对比,是一个概念识解另外一个概念。Lakoff和Johnson(1980)在《我们赖以生存的隐喻》一书中说道,隐喻是由一个相对清晰的隐喻的始源域和一个结构相对模糊的目标域构成,通过始源域作为本体,目标域作为喻体,将始源域的图式结构映射到目标域之上。例如:Mark Twain is a mirror of America。即马克吐温是美国的一面镜子。此句中“马克吐温”是目标域,“镜子”是源域,其中目标域“马克吐温”是以源域“镜子”来识解的。

二 《新视野大学英语》读写教程中的情感隐喻

《新视野大学英语》(第三版)是为通用英语阶段设计的系列教材。该教材认真贯彻落实了《国家中长期教育改革和发展纲要(2010-2020)》和《关于全面提高高等教育质量的若干意见》的精神,在课程性质上体现工具性与人文性的有机结合,在教学目标上体现个性化教学需求,在教学理念上体现“以教师为主导,以学生为主体”,在教学手段上体现教学的立体化,个性化和便携性。该教材的选材富有时代气息,体现思辨性和人文性,培养学生语言能力和跨文化能力。除了基本的词汇和语法结构,课文更是以语言学理论基础作为强大依托,各种例句比比皆是。本文主要以语言学中的隐喻理论作为理论基础进行研究分析。

三 《新视野大学英语》读写教程中的隐喻功能探析

Lakoff和Johnson(1980)把隐喻分为实体隐喻,结构隐喻和方位隐喻三类。

(一)实体隐喻

人类对物体的经验为其将抽象的概念表达提供了物质基础,因此派生出了实体隐喻。实体隐喻是指人类以自身经验和生理体验为基础,把事件,行为,情感,思想等抽象概念转换为实体。以涨价经验为例,这种经验可以通过“通货膨胀”隐喻为实体。例如:Inflation is lowering our standard of living. 通货膨胀降低了我们的生活水平。而在《新视野大学英语》第三册第四单元的课文《令人惊奇的旅行目的》中,作者则以travel这个抽象概念为中心词,做出了一系列的实体隐喻。

Why do we travel? I don’t mind the actual flying, the wonder of being airborne in a dense metal bird. The rest of the journey, however, can feel like a tedious lesson in the ills of modernity from the predawn x-ray screening to the sad airport malls selling clusters of keepsakes. (B3U4)

文中travel的经历,通过actual flying(实际的飞行),being airborne in a dense metal bird(乘坐一个金属大鸟中飞行),tedious lesson(冗长乏味的课)等实体隐喻将旅行过程中的实际感受用生活中的其他情感体验和生理体验表达出来,以便让读者更好的领悟到在作者的笔下,旅行是一个很煎熬且痛苦的过程,甚至我们可以从笔者的角度去理解它,消化它,以便更好地对文章其他内容进行理解融合。

(二)结构隐喻

结构隐喻的重要作用在于它的指向性,给我们根据一个概念构造另外一个相关概念的可能性。我们对Argument is war(争论是战争)这个例子耳熟能详。这个隐喻可以引发He attacked my argument(他向我的论点发起进攻)等类似将争论比作战场上的战争的表达。在《新视野大学英语》第二册第一单元的课文《一堂印象深刻的英语课》中,通过对Language is a road map(语言是地图)结构隐喻的巧妙使用使得人们更直观的理解Z言学习和过程和其重要组成部分。

将语言Language比作地图Road map,由此引出的结构隐喻框架下,将检查巩固语法check grammar比作查看地图look at the road map,词汇vocabulary比作汽车发动机car engine,而提升词汇adjust vocabulary则比作调节汽车引擎tune up car engine。所以有着良好的语法知识和词汇库就好比随身携带一张地图在车况良好的车里驾驶。作者通过对结构隐喻的恰当使用,巧妙地将语言学习系统比作一系列人们日常中再熟悉不过的事物,使得读者更具体更直观的感受到了语言学习的基本结构以及学好语法和词汇的重要性,为我们对语言习得过程的理解提供了一条有效且生动的途径。

(三)方位隐喻

方位隐喻又叫做空间方位,它是参照空间方位而组建的隐喻概念。空间方位来源于人们将自身为参照物,最基本的概念:上―下,前―后,中心―边缘等。方位隐喻基于人类身体和文化的经验。例如:“多是向上”。这句隐喻基于物质数量的增加和物质水平的增加两种经验。其中最为常用的则是情感表达中的“高兴为上,悲伤为下”类似的表达方式反映了上―下图示。其认知基础是人的身体经验。由于人类的身体是直立的,向上的姿势往往与正面情绪相关,而向下往往与负面的精神状态联系。例如up形容自信和喜悦,down形容情绪低落和失望。

在上述例子中, 第一句中ascend原意表示“上升,升起”,这里实际代表的是作者个人情感的升华。第二句中的turn down中down为“向下”,表示拒绝。第三句中strick原意为“打,击”,是朝下的动作,句中意为”患病”。在教学过程中,可传授学生此类隐喻原理,帮助学生理解并掌握此类词语在实际语境中的意思和用法。

四 隐喻功能的课堂教学启示

隐喻功能是认知语言学领域一个重要的理论组成,它可以更好地帮助人类通过认知和推理将已知的、具体的概念域投射到新认识的、抽象的概念域,由中心意义向边缘意义扩展,从而使词汇之间产生内在的隐喻性联系。因此在大学英语课堂教学中,教师通过隐喻功能的导入达到以下三个层面的作用:首先可以引导学生,结合隐喻原理来理解词汇的具体义项与抽象义项之间的联系,了解词义的发展规律,扩大词汇量,提高阅读能力;其次,通过对局部词汇和句式的隐喻功能研究加强对文章主旨和结构的理解和渗透;第三,通过对隐喻功能在中英语表达中的使用作为帮助学生理解中西方文化差异的有效途径,有的放矢,中西贯通,为学生理解西方文化打下夯实基础。

综上所述,隐喻是大学英语课本中必须掌握的一种语言修辞格,教师应把隐喻基本理论应用到实际英语教学中,帮助学生把握隐喻,展开联想,掌握课文中出现的各种类隐喻的真正含x,缩小中西文化差异,融会贯通,开阔视野,提高英语语言文化水平。
